What is a blog niche?

A blog niche is a specific topic that you write about on your blog. A niche can be a broad topic like travel or personal finance or you can get more specific by writing about a sub niche and targeting a specific audience like solo women backpacking through Europe or budgeting for students.

The Importance Of Niching Down

If you want your blog to be successful quicker, it will help to niche down to one specific topic. Niching down will help you become an authority on your topic which Google will take into account when ranking your site.

Niche sites with quality content often rank higher than sites with a broader topic range.

So when the most profitable niches are highly competitive, it’s a good idea to look for sub niche opportunities that are still profitable but way less competitive.

What makes a good niche?

There are several things that determine if a blog niche is good or not.

When choosing a niche, make sure to ask these questions:

1. Is there demand for this topic?

When you pick a blog niche, you need to find out if people are actually searching for this topic online. Use a keyword tool like Ubersuggest to find out how many searches certain keywords get per month. Or use RankIQ for a huge keyword library of easy-to rank-for-keywords to give you inspiration.

2. Does this topic have a lot of competition?

If you want your blog to get traffic easily it will of course help to choose a low competition niche. The best way to find out how much competition your blog topic has, is to Google it.

Are there lots of other blogs writing about the same topic? Or can’t you find answers to certain question because no blog has covered this topic yet?

Don’t get discouraged if there are lots of other blogs about the same topic, a little bit of competition is actually a good thing, it means your topic is in demand.

3. Can this topic be monetised in several different ways?

Getting traffic to your blog is one thing, but being able to monetise this traffic is a whole other ballgame.

Think about who your audience is, what their struggles are and what you can offer them. Can you help them achieve a certain goal with an eBook, an online course or maybe a service?

Can you find relevant affiliate products for this topic?

Or will you churn out loads of content and monetise with ads?

If you’re stuck for ideas, make sure to check how your competitors monetise their blog, you might find ways you had never thought of.

4. Do you have the expertise and passion?

Last but not least you have to ask yourself if you have what it takes to write about this topic. Do you have a certain level of expertise that will allow you to write in depth quality content in this niche? And do you have the passion to write 100+ articles on this blog topic?

If your niche fits these 4 requirements you might’ve just found yourself a top niche idea!

How to find a profitable blog niche with low competition?

The easiest way to find low competition niches is to research your potential topic in Google or other search engines.

Type the main keywords for this topic into the search bar or type in certain questions people might have about this topic.

For most topics many website will show up in the search results answering questions about this topic, but the quantity of these websites is not as important as the quality.

Older more established sites often rank higher in Google, so if your topic has many of these sites ranking on the first page, it might be too competitive for a new blog to outrank them.

To get more information on your competitor’s sites you can use the free MOZ bar Chrome extension.

This handy tool will show you the DA (Domain Authority) of the competitor sites. A site’s DA is a number between 1 and 100 and the higher the number the more authority this site has. High DA sites are harder to outrank in Google so you want to make sure that your chosen blog topic has sites with low DA’s on the first page of Google.

Here’s an example of the MOZ bar DA results for the keywords: hydroponic gardening.

SERP results for Low competition niches for blogs

As you can see the website that ranks number 1 in Google has a DA of 23 which is not that high. The next site has a DA of 45 which is higher but not impossible to compete with.

If most other sites that rank on the first page of Google have a DA lower than 50 (for your niche keywords) then this niche is not too competitive and has potential for new blogs to rank.

Despite Travel being one of the most popular niches and therefore highly competitive, there are still opportunities for travel sub niches to do well.

The advantage of the travel niche is that you can add a country or city name to many search queries which opens up a whole bunch of opportunities for long tail keywords.

For example:

What to do in Fiji for a week

This long tail keyword includes the country name and there are quite a few low DA blogs ranking on the first page for this.

Let’s have a look at some travel sub niches with low competition:

  • Moving to another country/Expat living
  • Retreat reviews
  • Cruise reviews

You can’t sell to everyone. So it’s important to niche down to find the people who would LOVE to see your marketing and buy your product/service. It prevents you from wasting a ton of time talking to those who will ultimately never buy, and who have no vested interest in the pain point you solve. Niching down becomes a problem when you go too far.

The easiest way to identify a “good niche” is to use a tool like Ahrefs’ Keywords Explorer. With this tool, you can plug in different keywords to see if they represent a workable blog niche opportunity.
