1. Conduct Sound Keyword Research
Performing proper keyword research is the first step to higher ranking in search engines. Keyword research involves finding the words or phrases people are using to search the web. Carefully conducting research can help you identify the right keywords to align with your content strategy and target audience.
Keyword research involves considering multiple factors before targeting them, for instance, how much search volume they offer and how easy or difficult (competitive) they are to rank for.
You’ll want to target relevant keywords that match your audiences’ user intent and also make sure that your site has enough authority to be able to rank for these keywords.
To be able to target keywords that your blog can rank for, you’ll need to use a keyword research tool. I use RankIQ for this as it’s a keyword research tool that’s especially made for bloggers.
You can add your website details in RankIQ and then it provides you with a keyword library full of keywords that your site can rank for.
It’s a great tool for beginners because it shows you how to use it with video tutorials and it basically teaches you how to do keyword research.

2. Write Quality, Engaging and Unique Content
Content is the backbone of your blog, and creating quality content can lead your website to a higher ranking in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages).
Search engines value original content that answers the search query as thoroughly as possible. So for the best chance to rank in Google it’s a good idea to answer your topic questions clearly and also answer closely related questions as well. This will ensure that your site visitor gets the answer they were looking for without having to go to another website to find more information.
Writing high quality content can be time consuming but there are a few tools you can use to make this easier:

3. Optimise Your Website For Mobile Devices
Because most people use portable devices like mobile phones, tablets, and even smartwatches for web browsing these days, it’s more important than ever to optimise your website for mobile viewing. This means your website appears and works the same on all screens.
Using a mobile responsive WordPress theme is the easiest way to make your site mobile optimised.
Some good responsive themes are:
Mobile responsiveness is an important ranking factor in search engines and if your site has mobile issues it is likely to drop in ranking.
Mobile-first indexing is a new approach opted by search engines that prioritises mobile-responsive websites while indexing.
If you want to stay updated on your website health it’s a good idea to create a Google Search Console account. If your site is having any mobile issues Google Search Console will notify you.
4. Have A Link Building Strategy
If you struggle to rank higher with almost every tip and trick and still are not getting desirable results, you may be missing a link-building strategy.
Search engines consider a website authoritative and credible by being discussed and mentioned on multiple web pages.
Therefore, getting other websites to link to your site is an important strategy.
Getting backlinks from high-authority and relevant websites signals to search engine crawlers that your website is a reliable and reputable source of information.
The best way to get these links is to create quality content that high-authority websites want to link to organically. You can also write guest posts for other sites to grow your backlinks. It’s best to avoid paid linking and focus on quality over quantity of backlinks.
Another linking technique is to use internal links within your website. By internally linking one blog post to another, you encourage your readers to stay on your blog longer and you can direct search engine crawlers to other relevant pages on your website.

5. Website Optimisation
As the name suggests, Search Engine Optimisation, or simply SEO, is the process of optimising a website according to the search engine requirements. It’s a simple equation: if you want to rank higher in the SERPs, your website must comply with certain SEO rules.
The main thing to keep optimised on your website is your loading times. If your site is slow to load, visitors may leave before they even arrived on your site. This will increase your bounce rate which in turn will signal to Google that your site is not great for user experience and can result in a drop in ranking.
Some fixes for slow site speeds are:
- Reducing the HTTPs requests for your website
- Using a caching plugin
- Reducing image sizes
A great plugin for optimising your site performance is WP Rocket
I use this plugin on my site and it reduced my loading times from 8.3 seconds to 1.8 seconds!
Speed up your website with WP Rocket now.

Website optimisation and SEO is a continuous job for a blogger. With the constant updates in search engine algorithms, SEO requirements keep changing over time.
Stay updated on these changes and keep up with the SEO trends. This doesn’t mean you should follow every new technique, simply focus on SEO strategies that work for your website and increase your rankings.
6. Updates and Maintenance
Keeping your website up to date is another important ranking factor. It’s a good idea to audit your site regularly to find any errors or anomalies in your site performance. Look for any duplicate content, broken links, speed reduction, and identify 404 or other errors that negatively affect your SEO.
Also keep in mind that using an optimised WordPress theme for your site or upgrading your hosting plan make a huge difference in your site performance.
